Black-Palestinian Solidarity:
Stories of Intersecting Struggles & Resilience with Garry ‘Malachi’ Scott and Omar Hmidat
Yallah AlQuds’ 2021 spring lecture series highlighted the intersectional work of Black and Palestinian activists in resisting oppressive systems of government-sanctioned violence, police brutality, mass incarceration and human rights abuses in the United States and in occupied Palestine. We were honored to be joined by Garry ‘Malachi’ Scott, a community organizer for restorative justice based in California, and by Omar Hmidat, a decolonial researcher and documentary filmmaker based in London.

Language Proficiency Workshops with
Dr. Sonia Shiri
Dr. Sonia Shiri, director of the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) and leading expert in the field of Arabic language education research & pedagogy, led a two-part training for Yallah AlQuds’ spring course facilitators. Dr. Shiri shared her insights into course design, interactive virtual activities and facilitation strategies, and workshopped ideas with YAQ facilitators for improving language learning outcomes and overall experience for program participants.

Fundraiser for EFL Program in Inzegan
The Yallah AlQuds community fundraised more than $2000 to equip partnering English as a Foreign Language classes at the non-profit Jama’iyyat Taiba for Orphans in Inezgane, Morocco with technology needed to connect students with their native speaker instructors based in the US. The new classroom setup supports Yallah AlQuds’ ongoing EFL programming, which aims to expand access to English language education & exchange opportunities for youth in under-resourced communities.

Jiran: Arabic-Speaking Neighbors Empowering One Another Through Mutual Exchange
Yallah AlQuds’ first lecture program featured a dialogue between Jiran program co-founders, Maha Abdullah and Emily Goldman, and program staff members, Joy Al-Nemri and Ibrahim Wali, to speak about the obstacles that newly-resettled, Arabic-speaking refugees encounter in the US and Jiran’s efforts to support families in overcoming these challenges through community building initiatives in partnership with Arabic students.
